It’s been our honor to serve as volunteers at Listening at the Legion. We’d like to share a little about The Volunteer’s Perspective.
Ever since the move to Estes Park in 2022, Miranda and I have found ourselves more and more surrounded with music. We’d been involved with singing groups in Atlanta for many years but knew nothing of the music scene in Estes. That changed quickly though, with a visit to the local Ace Hardware. Our cashier that day was none other than the director of one of the local choruses, and it didn’t take long for us to jump into that one, then the other local community choir a short time later. Those two and three small singing ensembles later, we were wondering where all our spare time had gone!
Clearly we hadn’t learned our lesson yet, because when Steve Tice asked us to join the organizing committee for Listening at the Legion, we said “YES”. This was new ground for me, having never been involved in anything like this before. But the allure of learning new things was strong and we jumped in with both feet. What an adventure it has turned out to be!
Miranda and I have been volunteers at the Listening at the Legion series now for a few years. Sure, we love the music, and we especially love the listening room format, but it’s bigger than that. You see, neither of us is a Veteran, but we absolutely believe that our Veterans deserve all the honor and respect due them for serving our country. Helping support the LATL series is our way of showing gratitude to those who’ve given so much.
That Post 119 has chosen to open its doors to everyone is huge. We love how the renovation has transformed the space and are happy to show it off to those who come in for the first time to take in one of our shows. It’s been fun to watch the series grow, and to have our reputation with the performers grow with it. They love Estes Park, being so welcomed by the hosts and the audience, and you can bet that they can feel the excitement and all-around good vibes from everyone there. Add to that the intimacy of the space and the listening room format and without a doubt, we’ve got a winner of a music series right here in our tranquil valley. This isn’t just The Volunteer’s Perspective. It’s coming from all directions.
With respect to the improvements at the Legion, we’re certainly not done yet. Whether we’re talking about signing artists with a bigger presence in the music world, or redoing the lighting for stage, we know we can raise the bar and put Listening at the Legion in an ever better place. That is and will always be the challege, and one that we gladly accept.
